Most of the prisons of Maharashtra have Agricultural land attached to them. It is being used for producing food grains, vegetables, fodder crops and other crops. The main aim of agriculture in prison is to rehabilitate inments (criminals) by giving them works in fields and have a source of income through the labour charges paid to them. This training of doing various agricultural operations in field during crop growth will help the prisoners to implement that experience in his own field after his release.

In the 27 Prisons of Maharashtra there are 341.44 ha. Land which is used for agricultural cultivation. Out of this land 160.00 ha. Land is under irrigation and 181.44 ha. Land is rain fed.

Cultivation of food crops, pulses, oilseeds and vegetable (fruit and leafy) crops is done on prison agriculture land during Kharif, rabbi and summer season. The produce from agriculture is used for the daily food preparation of the prisoners and excess is sold in market. At Paithen open prison cultivation of sugarcane is done. The produce is used for preparation of Gur with the help of prisoners which is supplied to all prisons of Maharashtra. Averagely 850 to 900 prisoners get daily work in prison agriculture.

There are tractors and various necessary tractor drawn and bullock drawn implements on various jails for cultivation of land and doing intercultural operations during the crop growth. For irrigating the agricultural land there are enough number of electrical motors and oil engines on farms. In live stocks there are 158 bullocks and 270 other animals on the jail fields. From mulching animals production of milk is done at some prisons which is used for prisoners. At Atpadi prison goat raring project is undertaken

In most of the prisons in Maharashtra there is horticulture plants like Coconut, Mango, Guava, Tamarind, Amala, and Pomegranate are planted in scattered conditions. Nearly about 4000 plants of above fruit crops are growing on the prison fields. Similarly the other plants like Teakwood, Nilgari, Babhol, Sisam etc. are also planted on prison land which is not use for agriculture purpose. As such there are nearly 78000 various types of plants are in growing stage. We are planning for more plantations of the above plants on barren and open land of prison.
